Trial expected to open in rape killing of Sabina Rose O'Donnell

PHILADELPHIA - April 30, 2012

The trial of 20-year-old Donte Johnson could take two weeks after a hearing Monday to determine if statements he made to police can be heard in court.

Police say Johnson told investigators he strangled 20-year-old waitress Sabina Rose O'Donnell nearly two years ago after she screamed when he tried to rob her in the city's Northern Liberties neighborhood.

Authorities say Johnson claimed he was initially just trying to take O'Donnell's bike. Her body was discovered the next day.

Prosecutors say Johnson may have mental health issues. His attorneys have said in court he has cognitive issues that affect his decision-making ability.
