Chester Co. teen in coma after hit-and-run

PAOLI - May 5, 2012

19-year-old Eliza Gresh is a University of Miami freshman. A week ago, she was just days away from coming back to her home in Paoli for summer break when police say a driver struck her at 50 miles per hour and kept going.

"We're still critical but stable. Everyday small steps are being made to improve her recovery. We're just hoping we can get her out of the ICU soon," said Perry Gresh.

Eliza's father is a Bryn Mawr business man. He spoke with Action News over the phone Saturday night.

Those who know Eliza are disturbed to hear the details of the hit-and-run crash. The driver was identified as 24-year-old Luis Felipe Moya.

Police say Moya took his damaged Mercedes Benz to a repair shop but when the mechanic saw Eliza's story on the local news, he called police.

Moya is still on the run, but authorities arrested his mother, who is accused of trying to cover up the crime.

"This is a man who should stand up and take responsibilities for his actions and it doesn't appear he's going to," said Gresh.

Suffering a number of injuries from the accident, doctors have Eliza sedated in a medically induced coma.

"That's all we can do is count our blessings and wait for her to heal," said Gresh.

Online there has been an outpouring of support for Eliza. Her father has posted updates on Facebook and he even set up a website so friends could leave messages for her.

The messages are coming in fast for Eliza who graduated last year from the Shipley School.

And while her parents are in Miami, their neighbors on Cobblestone Drive got teary thinking about the teenage girl.

"I'm getting all flustered. It's just horrible. I don't know what to say. My pain is going out to the family of course," said Claudia Davis.

Family and neighbors agree they want justice but right now can only focus on Eliza's recovery.

"I actually don't care about him at all. Of course as a parent, you want the closure and you want the justice but I understand they would focus exactly on Eliza, that's all that matters," said Hugh Brownstone, neighbor.
