The incident took place around 4:00 p.m on the 2400 block of 56th Street in Wynnefield Sunday afternoon.
Police say it began at a car stop which was followed by an argument.
According to officials, someone in the car ran into a nearby home on 56th.
Police followed.
"A confrontation ended up in the porch then it spilled into the house," Philadelphia Police Captain Michael Weaver said.
Weaver said an individual then showed up with a Rottweiler on a leash and sicced the dog onto the officers.
"The officers were wrestling inside the house with somebody on the ground. They discharged and dispatched the dog," Weaver said.
It was one of the officers who shot and killed the dog.
The Rottweiler's body will be examined for diseases.
In the meantime, the officer who was bitten was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
"The officer received a pretty significant bite wound to his wrist," Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Kevin Bethel said.
He is expected to be okay.
It is not clear yet what the initial car stop was about or how many people will be charged.
