Father charged with murder in S. Texas shootings

McALLEN, Texas (AP) - June 20, 2012

Demond Bluntson, 36, was also charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant and one count of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, Laredo Police spokesman Joe Baeza said in a prepared statement. Bluntson was being held without bond.

Police say Bluntson shot and killed his 21-month-old son Davian and shot and wounded 6-year-old Jaydin in a Laredo hotel room on Tuesday. Jaydin was on life support at a San Antonio hospital Wednesday, Baeza said.

Bluntson could face more charges in El Campo, some 200 miles away, where police believe Bluntson killed his girlfriend, the boys' mother, before leaving for Laredo. Becky Ivy, a legal assistant in the Wharton County District Attorney's office said that there was still a pending investigation in the case and they would not be commenting at this point on possible charges.

El Campo Police Chief Terry Stanphill said earlier Wednesday that police had confirmed a body found a day earlier was that of 28-year-old Brandy Cerny. He was awaiting a preliminary autopsy report, but said that Cerny's body also showed evidence of gunshot wounds.

A neighbor found Cerny's body in a building on a property in El Campo where Bluntson used to keep dogs, Stanphill said. Cerny was last seen with her sons at church in El Campo on Sunday. Her father reported her missing Monday morning and investigators traced a lead to Laredo.

Baeza said police went to the hotel about midday Tuesday after receiving a call from police in the family's hometown of El Campo, a city more than 200 miles northeast of Laredo, saying the family might be in some kind of trouble.

The desk clerk directed officers to a room on the 14th floor, where they knocked, identified themselves as police and immediately heard several shots, Baeza said. One shot came through the room door and narrowly missed two officers, he said.

Police cleared the building, which was packed with people attending a convention, then entered the room and arrested Bluntson.

Davian, the 21-month-old boy was declared dead at the scene, while his 6-year-old brother, Jaydin, was hospitalized in critical condition. Baeza said Wednesday morning police know of no change in the 6-year-old's condition.

Prior to that discovery, family members were already reeling from the attack on the boys.

"We're all extremely distraught," Cerny's aunt Dianne Cerny told The Associated Press. "Brandy is a bright, beautiful woman, and the boys were both absolutely delightful."

She said Bluntson is the father of younger boy, Davian. She said 6-year-old Jaydin was put on life support.

Dianne Cerny said family members last saw Brandy Cerny and her boys at church Sunday morning. The close-knit family had gathered the night before to celebrate Father's Day, she said.
