Adult chimpanzee kills baby chimp at LA Zoo

LOS ANGELES (AP) - June 27, 2012

The baby's mother kept the chimp's body overnight after Tuesday's violence.

Spokesman Jason Jacobs says caretakers will decide how long she can keep it.

The infant was born March 6 and was being gradually introduced to the troop, one of the largest in a North American zoo. Jacobs says there were no aggressive signs but experts say it is common in the wild for males to kill the offspring of females they are interested in.

Jacobs says the zoo is very crowded Wednesday and there has been an outpouring of sympathy at the zoo and on the zoo's Facebook page.
