Katrina victims send train filled with Sandy aid to NJ

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - November 10, 2012

An Amtrak train from New Orleans arrived in Newark today with a box car full of storm relief items from Hurricane Katrina victims. Volunteers are working with officials in Hoboken and Bayonne to distribute the donations.

Meanwhile, residents of hard-hit Long Beach Island were allowed to return home Saturday for the first time since the devastating storm made landfall Oct. 29. Many houses there suffered extensive damage and flooding.

The developments come as utility companies work to restore power and state-imposed gas rationing continues in 12 counties.

More than 100,000 customers remained without electricity this afternoon, mainly along the coast. Most service was expected to be restored by tonight.
