Husband, wife rescued from burning home in Burholme

PHILADELPHIA - October 17, 2013

The fire broke out just before 3:00 a.m. on the 7400 block of Montour Street.

Firefighters arrived to heavy flames showing on the first floor and smoke on the second floor of a twin house.

They found an elderly married couple unconscious in a bedroom and were able to get them out of the home.

Medics rushed them to separate local hospitals to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Both were stablized, then airlifted to Temple University Hospital in critical but stable condition.

The fire was placed under control within twenty minutes.

A neighboring house suffered minor damage to the back of the house.

Those residents have been allowed to return.

Fire officials say the home was equipped with smoke detectors, but they were not working.

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the blaze.
