NJ babysitter charged after 4-year-old dies

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - May 8, 2014

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says police were called around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday to an apartment in Newark's Bradley Court complex where Naira Bennett was found un-responsive. The 4-year-old was transported to the hospital, where she died at 7:11 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators say Bennett and three other very young children were apparently left unattended in the apartment.

The cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy.

Prosecutors say the children's babysitter, 38-year-old Sakita Covington of Newark, has been charged with child endangerment and aggravated assault.

She is currently being held at an Essex County jail. It's not immediately known if she has an attorney.
