PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Visit Philadelphia, the region's tourism marketing agency, is launching a new initiative to help boost Black and brown-owned businesses hit hard during this pandemic.

The effort aims to make the region aware of all that the small businesses the city has to offer. Businesses like Star Fusion Restaurant in the 5100 block of Parkside Avenue owned by Chef Darlene Jones. Jones opened the restaurant in June during the pandemic. She needs all the publicity she can get.

"The big push with Visit Philadelphia was to bring out other residents who live outside of the Pennsylvania area," Jones said. "With this new initiative they have going on is actually encouraging people who live right here in this city to come out here and come support local businesses. At a time like this, we all need it. I am grateful to be a part of this initiative."

American Hats owned by Reverend Georgiette Morgan Thomas located in the 2200 block of Farley Street also could use a boost during the pandemic.

Visit Philadelphia is now offering a chance to enter a sweepstakes to win a gift package that includes items such as a $50 gift certificate to both of those businesses and other items such as a Cultured Jawn t-shirt from Harriett's Bookstore.

It's a way to get people talking about what you can find if you visit small local businesses right in your own backyard.

"We know that small businesses are the lifeblood of Philadelphia, and we believe that diversity is the future of our economic growth. So, it is so important for people to put their dollars in places that matter in order to make an impact and that we don't leave any of these businesses behind," said Rachel Ferguson, chief innovation and global diversity officer at Visit Philadelphia.

The "Love and Grit" sweepstakes, named for Visit Philadelphia's podcast", is live now on Visit Philadelphia's website. It includes 10 items and experiences from Black and brown-owned businesses valued at $500.
