A deadly crash closed Route 55 South in Vineland for nearly 3 hours Friday morning.

VINELAND, N.J. (WPVI) -- A fatal crash closed Route 55 South in Vineland, New Jersey for nearly three hours.

It happened at 7:00 a.m. Friday near the Garden Road exit.

New Jersey State Police tell Action News one person was killed.

Images from Chopper 6 HD over the scene showed a single vehicle with what appeared to be moderate damage off to the side of the highway.

Motorists were being detoured off at Garden Road, some distance away from the crash scene.

Traffic was backed up for miles as police investigated and crews worked to clear the scene.

A heavy backup was also visible on an overpass where traffic was being detoured.

Route 55 South finally reopened to traffic just before 10:00 a.m.

The name of the person killed was withheld pending notification of family members.
