Wilmington police are investigating an accident in which a pickup truck struck and fatally injured a Benedictine nun. Sixty-four-year-old Sister Mary McLaughlin, known as Sister Mary Paul, was hit at 10th and Orange streets about 9:30 Tuesday morning.

A police spokesman says the pickup driver, a 52-year-old Newark man, hasn't been charged.

McLaughlin was trapped beneath the truck until she could be freed by emergency personnel. Authorities say she had suffered head and rib cage trauma and was taken to Christiana Hospital. Police learned of her death Wednesday morning.

McLaughlin belonged to the Benedictine Sisters of Ridgley, Md.
