State police say a man accused of severely beating his girlfriend and leaving her on the side of a Sussex County road has surrendered to authorities. Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh says 48-year-old Dennard Cannon turned himself in Sunday after seeing news reports about the incident.

Police say Cannon began arguing with the 43-year-old Bridgeville woman as they drove on Sussex Highway on Saturday. They say Cannon started punching the woman in the face and she jumped out of the car to escape.

Police say Cannon stopped the car and walked back to the woman and beat, choked and threatened her before driving away.

A passer-by stopped to help the woman, who was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for eyes that were swollen shut, and cuts and bruises across her upper body.

Whitmarsh says Cannon has been charged with second-degree assault and terroristic threatening and is being held at the Sussex Correctional Institute in lieu of $10,500 cash bond.
