The city will hire Kercher Engineering to handle the design for the rehabilitation of one three-block section of the boardwalk.
Commissioner Stan Mills says some sections beneath the structure have not been replaced in decades. He says construction on Phase I is expected to start in November and finish by Memorial Day 2009.
The entire boardwalk renovation could take four to five years to complete.
