A teacher once named Lumberton's Educator of the Year is charged with possession of child pornography.

Sixth-grade social studies and language arts teacher Joseph Macanga was arrested Wednesday.

The FBI seized his computer last fall after an agent found him in an Internet chat room used by pedophiles.

According to the criminal complaint, more than 300 images of child pornography were on the computer and there was evidence that he had accessed nearly 30 chat rooms with names like "baby&toddlerlove."

A woman who answered the phone at his home Thursday declined to comment.

The Lumberton Board of Education says the 55-year-old, who had taught in the district for 10 years, will not return to the classroom.

If he's convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
