Nintendo says its profit for the fiscal first quarter rose 34 percent from a year ago as sales of its hit Wii video game consoles shot up. Nintendo said Wednesday that April-June profit at the Japanese manufacturer of Super Mario and Pokemon video games stood at 996 million dollars.

Nintendo says it sold 5.2 million Wii machines worldwide during the quarter. That's 1.7 million more machines than for the same period last year.

Quarterly sales surged 24 percent to $3.9 billion dollars.
