NJ Lottery company fined

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - September 24, 2008 The Star-Ledger of Newark reports that the fines follow charges that subcontractors or partner firms of GTECH (pronouncer GEE-tek) Corporation hacked into the district's lottery system two years ago and printed winning tickets for themselves.

GTECH officials tell the Ledger that the incident was an unforeseen security breach that was immediately dealt with. They say the fine is unjustified and politically motivated and they plan to appeal.

GTECH's contract is up for renewal with the district. The company is also battling to renew the contract it has held with the New Jersey Lottery since 1984, worth a reported $15 million year.
