Recession or no recession, Pat Murray wasn't about to scratch any of her nine grandchildren from the old Christmas shopping list this year. But her husband's 12 siblings? They probably won't be finding gifts under her tree as the 55-year-old South Philadelphia woman downsizes her Christmas budget.

Murray is far from alone in her quest for deals and her cost-consciousness.

Pennsylvanians hit the malls in search of deals on Black Friday, the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season.

Nationwide, retailers were anticipating a difficult season as the economy continues to struggle and consumers count their pennies.

In Pittsburgh, Anne Turkowski headed out on Black Friday because it's a family tradition.

She says she'll probably be more deal-conscious this year, but that she may end up spending about the same as she did last year.
