Gift cards & no more Bratz dolls

December 4, 2008

The Bratz dolls are mega-popular! But its maker, M-G-A, suffered a big loss to toy giant Mattel on Thursday and the biggest losers of all could be young girls all across the country.

A federal judge has banned toy maker M-G-A Entertainment Inc from making and selling its hugely popular Bratz dolls. This ruling comes after a jury finding that the creator of Bratz developed the concept while working for Mattel.

The judge's injunction named all 40 dollars in the Bratz line. M-G-A must immediately stop manufacturing the dolls but the judge's order does allow M-G-A to wait until after the holiday season to remove the toys from store shelves. M-G-A plans to appeal.

Gift cards are easy to give but right now an email is making the rounds in cyberspace warning consumers not to buy them this holiday season. Beware, while there is some truth to the email, there is also some inaccurate and outdated information.

So here's what you need to know, it is true that this year consumers lost about 100-million-dollars in unused gift cards because the retailer had shut down.

However, some versions of the email suggest all the stores on the list are closing for good. That is not the case and in fact, many retailers that have downsized or filed for bankruptcy will continue operating for years to come and continue to accept gift cards. However, if you see signs of trouble, it is a good idea to use gift cards for that particular store as soon as possible.
