Wildwood raising revenue from auto accidents

WILDWOOD, N.J. (AP) - December 7, 2008 The seaside resort is the first Cape May County municipality to charge drivers for costs associated with automobile accidents.

Runaway property taxes prompted the move last year.

The charges vary from $750 for a fender-bender in which fluids spill onto the road to as much as $2,500 for accidents in which victims have to be pulled out of their cars.

Wildwood officials say the fees mostly affect tourists rather than local residents who already pay property taxes. And they note other towns on or near the Jersey Shore charge similar fees, though the amounts vary.

A quarterly report published in August revealed that Wildwood had raised about $10,000 through the car-crash fees.
