The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reports a record number of gun owners are turning in their weapons for gift cards.
Authorities say 590 guns and two hand grenades were handed in the first two weeks.
That easily out-guns last year's total of 387 weapons.
Deputies figure they'll have more than 1,000 firearms, by the time they add up all the guns turned in this weekend.
The guns are exchanged for $100 gift cards from Ralphs supermarkets, Target or Best Buy. Sheriff's Sgt. Byron Woods says in these tough times, the food gift cards are the most popular.
