Broadway designer's Tony nomination is withdrawn

Tony Award officials say a nomination for "Ragtime" designer Santo Loquasto (loh-KWAH'-stoh) has been withdrawn because his work resembles too closely the Broadway show's 1998 production.

Loquasto had been one of five candidates announced last week for Best Costume Design in a musical category.

Tony Award Productions says in a statement released Thursday there would be no substitute nominee for Loquasto. It says Tony rules forbid works that "substantially duplicate" previous productions.

Loquasto is a three-time Tony winner. He also has worked on movies.

The "Ragtime" website says his film work includes "Big," "Desperately Seeking Susan" and more than 20 Woody Allen productions. The website doesn't list any way to contact him.

The $8 million revival of "Ragtime" was based on E.L. Doctorow's best-seller about early 20th-century America. It closed in January.
