A new program called "Puppies for Parole" is under way at the state prison in St. Joseph, Mo.

Inmates at the prison are training dogs that have been left at animal shelters.

Officials say the program is good for the pups and the prisoners.

Inmates get to learn a skill and the animals are saved from being put down.

Officials say 30 prisoners have volunteered, with 10 chosen for the initial run.

Two dogs will be trained beginning next month, with more added later.
