2-alarm fire rips through Kensington warehouse

KENSINGTON - December 28, 2010

Firefighters are dousing hot spots that are flaring up from time to time inside the abandoned warehouse, located at American and Cambria Streets. At this point the fire is under control.

The blaze broke out at about 4:00 a.m. Tuesday and reached two alarms.

There were tires inside the structure along with a lot of junk, causing a lot of smoke. Fire officials were concerned that all the smoke might cause a problem for nearby residents, but in the end, no evacuations were necessary.

The battalion chief put the blaze in the same category as a dumpster fire because the place had burned before and didn't even appear to have a roof.

Firefighters struck a second alarm because of the smoke and wind and concerns that the wind might blow burning embers toward adjacent homes.

Luckily, no one was hurt.

Neighbors told police that people do go into the abandoned structure perhaps to stay warm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
