A champion gymnast is very lucky after a routine practice in Miami went very wrong. Twenty-one-year-old Jorge Valdes was practicing for tryouts in a Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas last Thursday.

He landed square on his head while doing a flip he had pulled off many times.

Valdes dislocated his neck and herniated his spinal cord.

It should have been a paralyzing injury, but doctors were able to decompress and realign his neck.

Valdes is now wearing a neck brace but expecting a full recovery.

"I was very scared. I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be able to walk at least for a while," Valdes said.
