Sea Isle City, a reminder of the Emerald Isle

SEA ISLE CITY, N.J. - March 17, 2011

Other towns may be green with envy, but US Census figures show that half of all residents in Sea Isle City are of Irish ancestry, making it to most Irish town in all of New Jersey.

"I am Irish. My grandfather was born in County Cork," says Jim Curtain.

"Every since I was a child, I can remember coming here as a kid and it was Irish. It was all Ireland," said Mary Turner.

"Sea Isle City is the Irish Rivera."

Longtime resident Pop Welsh and his wild leprechaun suit are a regular holiday sight in Sea isle and give new meaning to "the wearin' of the green".

"I dress in green every day," said James "Pop" Welsh. "In fact, I think if you cut me I'd bleed green.

Many of the Irish in Sea Isle City are transplants from Philadelphia. Every year on St. Patty's day the gang from the old hood has a routine.

"We go to Mass at St. Joseph's. And then, we go to breakfast. Then we come here," explains Maureen Ross.

"Here" is O'Donnell's Pour House where there are copious amounts of Irish coffees consumed.

For many, Sea Isle is a reminder of the Emerald Isle.

"I think that's why we're all here by the water," said Frances Cleary. "I think the water is the big attraction."

And while half the population is Irish, and showing it in every way they can, the mayor is Italian.

"The Irish-Americans are a very hard working people that have decided to make Sea Isle City, which is a great community, their home," says Mayor Len Desiderio.
