Judge wants more details on city 'pauper' request

READING, Pa. - August 23, 2011

The Reading Eagle reports Berks County President Judge Jeffrey Schmehl on Monday ordered the city to refile its request to save money while it seeks payment of money it's owed.

The cash-strapped city sought pauper status in July to avoid paying court costs as it tries to recover fees ranging from property liens to trash and sewer bills.

The Reading Eagle report says the city's petition did not specify the types of court actions the city planned to pursue.

Reading has been operating under a state program for struggling municipalities since last June.

A hearing on the request is scheduled for October.
