Rare cheetah birth at zoo

WASHINGTON (AP) - July 25, 2012

Two cheetah cubs are making their debut at the Smithsonian's National Zoo.

The three-month-old cubs had been kept from view.

But the cubs will be in their public enclosure for an hour each morning and afternoon.

Zoo officials say they plan to name the cheetahs after the fastest American male and female athletes in the Olympics 100-meter dash.

The cheetah births are significant because the species is threatened with extinction.
