The crash happened around 6:50 Sunday evening near North Broad Street and Glenwood Avenue in North Philadelphia.
Authorities say a Ford F-150 was travelling northbound when it crashed into a SUV, causing the truck to flip over at least four times.
"I heard an initial bang, a big bang and four more bangs and those came from the flipping," said witness Trevor Rouse.
People ran to find the 35-year-old driver of the pickup truck crawling out with a number of injuries, but not all of them were from the accident.
Police say the man had been shot at least eight times and believe he was driving himself to the hospital at the time of the accident.
The shooting victim was later taken to the hospital in critical condition.
"It was a dumb move but I understood his move. He was shot. He was trying to get medical help," said Clarence Cooper.
Witnesses say the man was driving about 80 miles per hour when he ran the light striking the SUV, which had a 37-year-old pregnant woman inside.
Police say the preganant passenger suffered head and neck injuries while the 24-year-old driver of the SUV suffered an injury to her arm. Both are recovering at area hospitals in stable condition.
Cooper says he was almost caught in the collision. His car was hit by a flying tire from the truck and he had one thought.
"What is going on? What is happening? It didn't dawn on me what had happened. I saw the pickup spinning and for a few seconds I didn't understand what was going on," said Cooper.
Meanwhile police are still working to find out where the pickup truck driver was shot and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
