Annual Joan Shepp sale runs through Saturday

CENTER CITY - Jan. 16, 2014

The sale is under way -- even though the boutique no longer has a basement.

The Joan Shepp Boutique moved out of its Walnut Street location last year and is planning to move to another site this Spring.

In the meantime, they've set up a pop-up store at The Shops at Liberty Place and they're trying to clear out merchandise. They've kept the "basement" name for their big sale, even without an actual basement.

Ellen Shepp explains, "This is the biggest Basement Sale that we've ever had, the biggest markdowns, so we can move into our next store clean. Most of them (the sale items) are current season. There are some things from past seasons that are 75%-80% off. The things that are in-season are 60% to 70% off."

Now, at this sale, bargain is a relative term. An outfit featuring a Junya Watanabe jacket, Aspesi top and Phillip Lim purse was originally priced at $2888. At the Basement Sale, you can pick it up for $1245.

Brown leather pants from Balenciaga, that were $1545 are priced at $618.

The basement sale draws in Shepp regulars, like Marlene Molinoff, of Center City. She picked up both sale and non-sale items.

But it also makes their unique designer labels a bit more accessible to those who don't usually shop here.

Shepp explains, "It's a big party. We always have music and food and something to drink. And we see people annually that we might not see during the year because it's a whole other customer that gets to shop for amazing things at good prices."

Everything on the two racks at the front of the store is $100 or less. There's a rack full of pants for $30... And you can pick up sweaters for as little as $80.

The sale runs through Saturday.
