50 shot, 5 fatally, in Chicago weekend violence

CHICAGO (WPVI) -- A new plan to curb violence in Chicago comes on the heels of a deadly weekend. Fifty people were shot, five fatally, across the city since Friday night.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to increase the number of police on patrol in each district, especially in high-crime areas. The mayor said his 2016 city budget would move 319 officers out of administrative positions and onto the street.

Emanuel's plan said 154 of the 319 officers will be beat officers at their respective districts; 60 officers will make up teams to provide what the mayor calls "nimble enforcement" across the city; 105 officers will be assigned as district impact officers, helping engage the community.

50 SHOT, 5 FATALLY IN CHICAGO

Over the weekend, Tyjuan Poindexter, 14, was among those killed. He died in a drive-by shooting near East 44th Street and South Greenwood Avenue in the city's North Kenwood neighborhood.

Tyjuan was walking to a school park with friends around 7:30 p.m. Saturday when he was shot in the head. The Cook County medical examiner's office said he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 15-year-old boy he was walking with was also shot.

Police said neither boy had criminal records nor any gang affiliations.

"I know the streets get real dangerous and they ain't trying to do nothing about it. My grandson is not a gang-banger," said Michael Gabb, Tyjuan's grandfather.

Tyjuan's family said his mother was overprotective of her son, never allowing him to go out on his own with friends, until he begged her Saturday night. She gave in only to get a devastating phone call minutes later.

The latest homicide happened Sunday morning in the South Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

Deionte D. Harris was shot in the face and thigh in the 8400 block of South Hermitage at 10:35 a.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Harris, of the 8200 block of South Bishop, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 11:05 a.m., authorities said.

Another man was found shot dead earlier Sunday morning in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.

About 5:25 a.m., officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 11700 block of South LaSalle found a 31-year-old man unresponsive inside a car parked in an alley.

He had been shot multiple times and was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead, police said. His name had not yet been released Sunday afternoon.

About three hours earlier, six people were shot - one fatally - in an Englewood attack, police said.

At 2:08 a.m., six people were outside in the 5700 block of South LaSalle when another group of people walked out of an alley and started shooting, police said. At least one person in the first group returned fire.

Six people in a vehicle caught in the crossfire were also taken to hospitals when the car flipped over.

Charles Lewis, 28, was shot in the chest and taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:29 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. His home address was not immediately known.

A 19-year-old woman whose face was grazed by a bullet was also taken to Saint Bernard, police said. She is listed in serious condition.

A 29-year-old woman shot in the face was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, as was a 28-year-old woman who suffered a graze wound to the buttocks. Her condition stabilized, police said.

A 29-year-old man shot in the arm and leg was taken to Stroger Hospital along with a 23-year-old woman shot in the left foot. Their conditions also stabilized, police said.

A police source said the 29-year-old man who was wounded and taken to Stroger is a convicted felon with an extensive gang history, and may have been the intended target of the shooting.

About 6 p.m., a 38-year-old man was fatally shot in Humboldt Park. He was standing with a group of people in the 1200 block of North Keeler when two people walked up and started shooting.

The man was shot in the back of the neck and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The most recent non-fatal shooting happened Sunday night in the Roseland neighborhood.

A man, whose age was not known, was in the 10100 block of South Calumet Avenue at 9:40 p.m. when he was shot in the abdomen, according to preliminary information from police. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where his condition was unknown, police said.

About an hour earlier, three men were wounded in a shooting in the South Side Ashburn neighborhood at 8:30 p.m. Two men, ages 18 and 19, and a third man, whose age was not known, were in the 2600 block of West 84th Place when they were shot, according to preliminary information from police.

The 18-year-old man was shot in the buttocks, and the 19-year-old man was shot in the right leg. They were both taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where their conditions were stabilized, police said.

The third man took himself to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park with a graze wound to the face, police said.

Ten minutes earlier, a man was critically wounded in a shooting in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

A 36-year-old man was shot in the abdomen in the 1600 block of North Laramie Avenue at 8:20 p.m., The man, a documented gang member, was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park in critical condition, police said.

At 6:53 p.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

The man, a documented gang member, was waking in the 5600 block of West Chicago Avenue at 6:53 p.m. when he heard shots and felt pain. But, the man has given investigators varying accounts of how he was shot, police said.

He suffered a gunshot wound to the left thigh, and took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said.

At least 33 other people have been shot across Chicago in separate attacks since 7:20 p.m. Friday.
