The brutal cold can be dangerous for young and old.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The word cold is going to take on a new dimension for our area starting overnight.

You have to take precautions for yourself, as well as children or older relatives because they can be at a greater risk for problems.

But no one is immune from frostbite.

You lose the most heat from your head and torso so make sure if you have to be outside, bundle up: cover your head and neck.

Pay special attention covering smaller areas such as your ears, hands, toes, and nose, these areas typically suffer first.

And overall, in extremely cold temperatures it doesn't take long for frostbite to set in.

"It can happen in a matter of minutes, less than five minutes, if you don't have the proper protective gear on and if the wind chill is significant enough," Dr. Robert Czincila of Einstein Medical Center Montgomery said.

If you have elderly neighbors, check in with them, make sure they're staying warm and safe.
