Consumer Extra: Free app helps curb online spending

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- We've all done it: spotted a great deal for a cool product or service, signed up for the automatic monthly subscription and then completely forgotten about it.

Companies continue to bill our credit cards, and the cost keeps adding up.

Now there is free help to cut the fat from your spending for you, and it's FREE.

It's called Trim.

Here's how it works:

You give your credit and debit card login information so Trim can scan your statements.

If you don't want to hand over your personal info, you can send copies of your statements instead.

You'll get a text message from Trim with a list of all your recurring charges.

Text back with which ones you want to cancel, and the company takes it from there.

Trim will make requests on your behalf to those service providers and will follow up with more information if it needs it.

Trim does have some limitations, though.

For instance, Lifelock, Equifax, Xbox Live, Soundcloud and Dropbox generally want to hear directly from customers - sometimes because they want more information, like a

social security number - and Trim does not ask for that from customers.

Trim does not charge for its service and will not sell your data.

However, if you want a premium version, there is a subscription fee.
