BB gun shooting leads to police chase in Stanton, Delaware

STANTON, Del. (WPVI) -- Police arrested a suspect they say shot a 10-year-old boy with a BB gun then led them on a chase in Stanton, Delaware.

The shooting was reported after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of Nicholas Court.

Ten-year-old Adam Cabrera was riding his bicycle when a man driving a Toyota SUV approached him.

"He's like, 'Do you want something?' I said, 'What is it?' He was like, 'Here you go.' And he pointed a gun. It wasn't pointed at me, it was pointed at him. I said, 'No thanks,'" Cabrera said.

Cabrera headed home fast, but the SUV followed.

The driver yelled that it was an Airsoft gun, a kind of replica sports weapon that uses gas to fire BB-sized projectiles.

"He chases after me and shoots me in the left hip. I heard it and then I saw it fly, luckily miss, and hit my shirt," Cabrera said.

The 10-year-old told his mom and stepdad. New Castle police were alerted and officers soon spotted a black SUV matching the description.

Police say they tried to stop the vehicle on Kirkwood Highway, but that led to a chase.

The pursuit of the SUV was called off after it hit another car.

Because of the prior shooting incident, police identified the suspect and went to a house on Stanton Road where the 15-year-old suspect was taken into custody.

The Toyota SUV, determined to be stolen, was found nearby.

Earlier this month, the same suspect was arrested by state police for his involvement in stealing multiple cars from a local commercial garage.
