The last day of school isn't far off and while a break from classes can be a relief, many youngsters can have a "summer slide," forgetting what they've learned.
Studies show providing books during summer can translate into better reading scores in the fall, especially when kids pick the books themselves.
And it's best to choose the books before school ends.
"If kids are motivated and inspired by their own choices, they're more likely to have a better outcome," pediatrician Dr. Elaine Schulte said.
Experts also recommend setting aside a special reading time, such as right before bed or first thing in the morning.
It encourages a good reading habit that can last all year.
