Making strides against breast cancer through volunteering: Alicia Vitarelli reports during Action News at 4pm on October 13, 2017.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Hundreds of people in our area are fighting cancer through research and treatment, but many more are also involved - volunteering to drive patients, organize walks, and make phone calls.

Even in summer, Betsy Williams is preparing for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in October.

This elementary school teacher could spend her break on the beach, but that's not in her DNA.

"My mom was a caregiver of everybody," she said.

And when she lost her mother to breast cancer, Betsy began volunteering with the American Cancer Society.

"I was just trying to deal with my grief. I wanted to turn it into action some way, to make a difference," she said.

So she helped out at one event, then another, and another. She's also made a fundraiser at her school an annual event.

"In the past 11 years, we've made well over $100,000," she said.

And she's always in the midst of the 'Making Strides' walk every year, usually at the registration table.

"My favorite part is welcoming the people. I love seeing people coming back - especially survivors. That they're still there, and healthy, healthier than the year before," said Betsy.

Betsy also speaks to groups, recruiting other volunteers. She firmly believes that all the research and trials of new treatments will cure cancer.

"If my little bitty part can help, then how can I not do it?" she said.

You can join Betsy and all the survivors on Sunday morning, October 15, at Citizens Bank Park for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. Registration begins at 8:30am..
