FDA delays new labels on packaged food and drinks
FDA delays new labels on packaged food and drinks. Registered Nurse Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5 p.m. on June 14, 2017.

New labels to make it easier to see how many calories or added sugars you're eating has been put on hold.

The FDA had originally given companies until July of next year to put the new labels on packaged food and drinks.

The goal was to make calorie counts more prominent.

And also display the amount of added sugar, and make the serving size more realistic.

But the agency said yesterday the deadline is being delayed - with no new date set.

Some big companies still plan to roll out the new nutrition labels by next year.

Recently, the FDA also delayed a rule requiring calorie counts nationwide at chain restaurants.
