Demonstrators mark 30th anniversary of MOVE bombing West Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Hundreds of people gathered Wednesday to mark the 30th anniversary of a long standoff between Philadelphia police and the liberation group MOVE.

Eleven people, including 5 children, were killed when the police department dropped a bomb on the group's fortified West Philadelphia compound on Osage Avenue.

Because of the volatile situation, firefighters were unable to stop the flames from consuming 61 homes.

Three blocks of that West Philadelphia neighborhood essentially burned to the ground.

Dozens of demonstrators gathered at that very site.

Erica Mines was holding up a sign listing some of the victims.

"I also remember this incident happening as a child and I remember the bomb dropping on this house and I remember the neighborhood go up in flames. This is something that Philadelphia has to remember, this something that is not going to go away. This is something that has to be dealt with," said Mines.

The day is also being marked with commemoration events from people all over the country with similar events.
