NEWARK, N.J. -- Authorities say a 48-year-old New Jersey man returning from Peru was stopped at Newark Liberty International Airport with 10 pounds of cocaine stuffed inside food products.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Anthony Bucci said that William Anthony Sanchez, of Newark, was stopped on Sunday after officers found food, drinks and Oxycodone pills in his checked back.

Bucci says officers then found about 10 pounds of cocaine inside of nougat cakes, bags of coffee and powdered drinks.

Officials say the drugs had an estimated street value of $170,000.

Sanchez faces drug smuggling charges. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney to comment on his behalf.

He was being held at the Essex County Jail on $250,000 bail.
