Fmr. 76er Doug Overton charged with indecent exposure in Montco

LOWER MERION TWP., Pa. -- A Big 5 Basketball Hall of Famer and former 76ers player was arrested over the weekend in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County.

A former NBA player and current college coach has been arrested on charges that he exposed himself on a public trail in Pennsylvania.

Doug Overton, coach of Division II Lincoln University, was arrested April 30 on charges of indecent exposure and disorderly conduct. He is free on $10,000 bail.

Overton, 47, was a standout at La Salle University and played 11 seasons in the NBA for eight teams.

It was on Sunday when a call came in, complaining about a man exposing himself near the Levering Mill entrance of the popular Cynwyd Heritage Trail.

A husband and wife told police at first, when they passed him, they thought he was urinating.

Later, the wife said, the still-exposed man, who was walking a dog, stopped and looked at her for several minutes before walking on.

In court documents, the husband said, "the male as walking calmly and deliberately and seemed to be aware that he was exposing himself but was content with the situation."

A third person also notified Lower Merion police.

An officer stopped someone matching the description of the man. The three witnesses positively identified him.

There was no response on Wednesday at Overton's fenced-in Philadelphia home.

Neighbor Steve Jones, the Chair of the 52nd Ward, said Overton walking his dog is a familiar sight.

"I would tell you he's a pretty decent person, that I know of. I know his family, they're pretty decent, and I have nothing bad to say about the gentleman," Jones said.

Lincoln University issued a statement to say it is aware of the allegations surrounding the arrest.

Overton has been the head men's basketball coach since May 23, 2016. The university said it has made no change to Overton's employment status.

Overton has changed lawyers, but his first attorney said that the charges were 'preposterous."

He said that Overton told him he had gone off the trail to relieve himself, but did not expose himself to anyone. He is 'humiliated' and 'frustrated' over the charges that have lodged, he said.
