Shelter Me: Providence Animal Center

MEDIA (WPVI) -- Sophie is a timid pup who won the hearts of a local couple who came to the Providence Animal Shelter to sponsor a few dogs for their wedding. Instead, Sophie wound up in the wedding - as the dog of honor.

"That sweet story has won us a grant, the amount we'll find out very soon but whatever it is, we're so grateful for and it will save so many lives," says Providence Animal Shelter's Director of Public Relations and Special Events, Justina Calgiano.

The $10,000 grant comes from the Petco Foundation's annual Make Holiday wishes come true campaign. And now, Sophie's sweet story is competing for Petco's People's Choice Award as well - a title that brings with it an additional $25,000.

"We are 100-percent privately funded. Having grants like this is truly lifesaving and it allows us to care and save for all of these animals. So please choose Sophie as your favorite holiday wishes story, there's a lot of life-saving left to do," says Calgiano.

Providence can use the money to save animals like Neezer, who was rescued from a high kill shelter in North Carolina.

"We know he'd be really great for pretty much any home," Calgiano says.

Ellie also comes from an overcrowded shelter in the south.

"She is a gem. Hopefully, she'll find a home in time for the holidays," Calgiano says.

Inside the cat room, 5-month-old Hazelnut awaits her forever home.

"She can be calm and chill, or rambunctious and spunky," says Public Relations assistant Emily Craft.

And 3-month-old Chase comes from a high kill shelter in Georgia. He is soft and cuddly, and we're thinking he will go extremely fast.
