Driver crashes stolen SUV into Brewerytown apartment building

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A joyride in a stolen SUV came to a crashing halt as it slammed into a brand new apartment building in the Brewerytown section of Philadelphia.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. Monday at 31st and Master streets.

Police were following the Mercedes ML350, stolen from elsewhere in the city, before it crashed.

Surveillance video shows the impact as the stolen vehicle came down 31st, popping up onto the sidewalk and slamming into the corner of The Hub at 31 Brewerytown.

"There's glass outside of our house on Master; it's unbelievable," Brendan Glass of Brewerytown said.

The driver was thrown from the SUV.

A police vehicle then arrived and backup was called.

"Looked outside, there's already like ten cop cars, a kid on the ground in handcuffs screaming, crying," Glass said.

The front bumper was up on the sidewalk amidst the broken glass, car parts, and debris.

The SUV was towed away and then the cleanup effort soon began.

The driver was injured. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The Hub was set to open in a matter of weeks.
