Teen struck and killed by CSX freight train in Olney

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are investigating a fatal train accident Friday night in the Olney section.

Tragically, somebody's child will not be coming home tonight. Police are still working to identify him but they say he was wearing a school uniform when he and another young teenager attempted to run across the tracks as a CSX Train was passing through.

Police say it was about 6:30 Friday night that 35th district officers responded to 911 calls of a child struck by a train near the SEPTA Olney train station.

Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police says a witness saw, "Two teenage boys running across the tracks, and that's when one got struck by the train."

Police say the CSX Freight train was traveling westbound near Tabor and Mascher when the accident happened.

Police say one of the boys was carrying a Little Caesar's Pizza box which was found on the ground near the victim.

Chief Inspector Small says the teenage boy was "Wearing tan khaki pants and a maroon polo pullover shirt which is consistent with a school uniform."

SEPTA'S Fox Chase line was shut down between Fern Rock and Fox Chase for several hours due to the ongoing police investigation.

The train operator tells police he was going about 35 to 40 mph when the accident happened.

The second boy who was running with the victim did not remain on the scene.

Small says, "We're looking for that second young man that crossed the tracks but then did not get struck."

Late tonight, police were checking on a report of a missing juvenile in the area but could not say with certainty if it is the child that was struck.
