Mother dies, 4-year-old child critically hurt in South Philadelphia house fire

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A mother has died and her 4-year-old daughter was critically hurt in an early morning house fire in South Philadelphia.

The fire broke out around 4:45 a.m. Friday in the 2600 block of S. Mildred Street.

Officials say two people, an adult woman and a child, were taken to the hospital with injuries. The woman has since died, according to officials.

Family members tell Action News that the victims are a 49-year-old mother and her 4-year-old daughter.

"My neice are her mother were trapped in the basement, so we drove here real quick. My fiance is over there at the house, checking everything out. And I was just trying to find her. Thats really the just of everything I know," the relative said.

Video obtained by Action News shows first responders rushing the child on a stretcher to a nearby ambulance before being taken to the hospital.

Part of Oregon Avenue is closed due to the response.

It is unclear how many home may have been damaged by the fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
