Speed cameras could be in Roosevelt Boulevard's future

It is known as one of the most deadly roads in Philadelphia.

Now, the Roosevelt Boulevard could be getting speed cameras to slow people down.

Under a proposed law, drivers going at least 11-miles per hour over the limit would automatically receive a $150 ticket in the mail.

Advocates say the Boulevard's outdated design invites dangerous behavior, with 61 traffic deaths in the past five years.

"No one deserves to die on this highway because of reckless drivers who blatantly violate speed limits, and too many lives have been destroyed because automated enforcement was not made available to reduce speeding," Sarah Clark Stuart, Executive Director of Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, said.

The proposal now before the Pennsylvania legislature calls for cameras along the Boulevard between 9th Street and the Bucks County line.

It was introduced by State Representative John Taylor.
