Queens acid attack leaves woman critical with badly burned face

QUEENS, N.Y. (WPVI) -- A 56-year-old woman was burned when a man threw an acid-like liquid in her face in a random attack in Queens, New York Wednesday.

The woman was approached by the suspect as she entered in her car in front of 33-02 Skillman Avenue at around 5:35 p.m.

The man, holding a coffee cup, first attempted to talk to her. When she declined, he threw the unknown substance in her face, then ran away.

She screamed and someone called 911. The woman was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, then to Cornell burn unit where she is being treated for serious burns. She is expected to survive, but has a facial injury.

She is critical.

Detectives are analyzing the substance, which is not pure acid, but appears to be an acid-like mixture.

They were reviewing nearby for surveillance cameras.
