PLANO, Texas (WPVI) -- Becoming a grandmother at 54 years of age isn't an unusual.
But giving birth to your own granddaughter, it is.
Tracey Thompson gave birth to a girl in Plano, Texas, on behalf of her daughter, Kelley McKissack.
Thompson offered to be a surrogate for her daughter and son-in-law after repeated they went through three years of fertility treatments and miscarriages, including a miscarriage on Christmas Day 2014.
Thompson was 7 years past menopause, but in great health.
Carefully-controlled hormone treatments prepared her body for surrogacy.
One embryo left from those treatments was implanted last spring.
"Her and her husband had been through so much with the miscarriages and the fertility, I really didn't want to disappoint her," says Thompson.
"No one could give a greater gift - ever," added Kelley.
The 6-pound, 11-ounce girl was named Kelcey, a combination of mom & grandmom's names.
Thompson says the second trimester was great, but the first and third ones were difficult.
Still, she has no regrets about being a surrogate, though she doesn't plan to do it again.
