Assistant Police Chief blazes a trail for women in law enforcement

HOUSTON, Texas -- March is Women's History Month, and we're honoring women who are leading their industries and inspiring others.

Assistant Chief Chandra Hatcher first started working for the Houston Police Department thirty years ago as a civilian employee, working an overnight shift in the city jail. Now, she's the highest-ranked African American woman within the Houston Police Department, one of the largest police forces in the country.

"I think women bring such a different, unique aspect to law enforcement," said Assistant Chief Hatcher. "I wouldn't say that all women are soft, but we definitely have a different way of connecting with people. We are mothers, we are workers, we are friends. We are beautiful. We have our own diversity and uniqueness about each and every one of us. And I think that there are people in our community who can connect with our stories."
