New Philadelphia mayor's first full day on job

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - January 8, 2008 Nutter took office yesterday with his inauguration, the swearing-in of his cabinet members, and a declaration of a "crime emergency." That orders the new police commissioner, Charles Ramsey, to develop a plan by Jan. 30 for combating the problem.

Nutter also attended a luncheon honoring the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce mentoring program. And he capped off the day with a ball at Philadelphia's cruise ship terminal.

The mayor will begin today on a somber note, however. He will attend the funeral in Washington of James Barnett, the husband of the mayor's incoming managing director, Camille Cates Barnett.

James Barnett died in a car accident last week as he was traveling from the couple's home in Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia.
