Truck driver killed by own truck

YORK, Pa. (AP) - February 15, 2008 The New Jersey man was apparently struck after 1 p.m. as a bulldozer was attempting to free his tractor-trailer, which had become stuck in the mud at Modern Landfill in Windsor Township, Lower Windsor Township Police Chief David Sterner said.

County Coroner Barry Bloss said a preliminary investigation indicated that the man was run over by his own truck and was probably killed instantly. The victim's name was not released until his family members have been notified.

Sterner said the man was run over by the trailer's rear wheels and possibly the trash compactor, which has a heavy barrel used to crush garbage. Police later said the man was run over by the compactor when it pushed the tractor-trailer forward.

The death of the victim, who worked for Wilkie Trucking Inc., is considered to be an industrial accident, which must be reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Bloss said. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday at Lehigh Valley Hospital to establish the official cause of death.
