Illegal immigrants targeted in NJ businesses

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - February 18, 2008 Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney, a Democrat, says he's pushing his bill after a federal judge held up a similar law in Arizona recently.

Sweeney says companies that hire undocumented workers are destroying opportunities for legal residents of New Jersey.

Under the measure, first-time offenders would have their business licenses suspended for 10 days. Repeat offenders could face permanent revocations.

Business groups say immigration should be regulated by federal authorities, not the states.

Sweeney says he'll introduce the Legislation soon.
